My Next Quilting Project

Blowin' in the Wind

For those of you who have been following along, you’ll know that I started my first ever quilt back in June when Tracy at It’s a T-Sweets Day! ran a beginner quilt along. I fell behind but my quilt top is done and waiting for me to sandwich all the layers together to begin quilting it. One of the ladies at my local quilt shop seems confident that I can quilt it myself and gave me some ideas for patterns I can use to free motion quilt it.

Since I’ve never done it before, I’ve set the quilt top aside for the time being, so that I can make a few practice pieces. My plan is to make a few place mats, mug rugs, and anything else I can think of, to gain some confidence before tackling my quilt. Honestly, I would love to take one of their FMQ classes, but most of them take place during the day in the middle of the week, and I have to work so it’s out of the question at least for the time being.

In the meantime, I have also decided on my next “large” project. It is not a full quilt, it is actually a wall hanging, and may end up being two wall hangings, because I have enough material to make two. The pattern is called Blowin’ in the Wind and was designed by Chris Malone, and can be found in the November 2017 issue of Quilter’s World Magazine, shown below.

On my last trip to my local quilt shop I bought all the materials for this wall hanging.

The fabrics on the left will be used to make the leaves, the top right is for the branch, inner border, and backing, and the bottom right is for the border. At the time I bought the material, my local quilt shop didn’t have anything which more closely matched the magazine photograph, so I may change that fabric before I’m done. My cousin has a new coffee table which more closely matches the colours from the original so it may work better with her decor if I can find another fabric.

And below are the fabrics I will use for the background. I haven’t started cutting yet (I’m a little bit afraid) plus I have a lot of other projects on the go right now, but I hope to get started on it soon.

So, what do you think of my pattern and fabric choices? Do you think I’m overly ambitious for my second big quilting project?

  1. Way to go for finishing the quilt top! πŸŽ‰ What an awesome accomplishment! I think the new pattern you have chosen looks like a really fun project. The fabric choices your have made should make it look spectacular! Good luck in your new challenge. πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘πŸ‘
