ARC Review: It Came from the Pumpkin Patch by Chris Heinicke and Kate Reedwood

If you’re looking for some light Halloween horror then look no further than It Came from the Pumpkin Patch by Chris Heinicke and Kate Reedwood. They have come up with yet another holiday based horror, set in the 1980’s, and infused it with all the humour, and nostalgia of their Mall Priest series (in fact you may notice a few cameos in this book).

The troubles begin when Timmy’s mom decides to steal some juicy looking pumpkins from the local agricultural lab’s crop and uses them in her baking for the upcoming Harvest Festival. Unbeknownst to her (and to the head scientist) the pumpkins have been treated with a dangerous compound, and soon the entire town is infected, and there is a giant pumpkin-rat running around town.

While there is some gore, this was such a fun read. I love the way these authors work together to come up with loveable (and hateable) characters, outrageous scenarios, and mix in the nostalgia of the decade I grew up in. I had ever intention of taking my time to savour this book over a couple of days, but instead found myself racing to the finish in one night.

Whether or not you love horror, I think you will find something to enjoy in It Came from the Pumpkin Patch, but be warned, you will never look at a pumpkin the same way again.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

It Came from the Pumpkin Patch will be published on October 22 2024.
