ARC Review: Game On by Ki Stephens

Cover of book Game On by Ki Stephens

Ki Stephens’ book Game On is a standalone contemporary romance set around the worlds of college football and cheerleading.

Ella Davies is a college student from the UK attending Whitland University, in Nashville Tennessee for a year to participate in their cheerleading program. Hudson Fox is the star quarterback at Whitland, and when the two of them meet up sparks fly.

If you can suspend disbelief then I think you can really enjoy this book. The characters are interesting, and I really enjoyed the relationships between them. They just seemed like a fun group of young college students.

Where I had issues was with some of the plot which had a few too many coincidences that made things convenient for the author. For instance, Hudson the star quarterback is a former cheerleader, so when Ella’s cheer partner is injured Hudson is able to take his place, and get up to competition levels within a very short period even though he hasn’t practiced in years.

I was also not a big fan of the one night stand when the characters met less than 24 hours after Ella’s longtime boyfriend had broken up with her, but that’s my personal issue.

Later in the novel I feel like the sexual tension could have been ramped up when Ella and Hudson were working together on their cheer routines if they hadn’t been in a friends with benefits situation.

I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Ella and Hudson. They weren’t without their problems, but by the end they seemed to understand each other, and appreciated each other’s individual quirks.

Overall, I found Game On to be a quick, engaging read and I enjoyed it despite the things I pointed out above. I think if you’re able to set aside some of the convenient plotlines, then you will enjoy Game On.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Game On will be available on September 9 2025.
