You Did Nothing Wrong by C.G. Drews is a disturbing, dark story that is hard to put down until you reach the equally dark, disturbing end.
Told in third person from the point of view of Elodie, a young mother expecting her second child, it’s immediately apparent that things are not right with her, or her son, or this relatively newly formed family. Elodie has disturbing thoughts that the reader is privy to, and secrets that the reader is not fully allowed to see, but it’s fairly easy to connect the dots here if you’re paying attention.
I thought I was getting into a haunted house story, but this was so much more than that. Is the house haunted? Is six year old Jude possessed? Is new husband Bren abusive? Is Elodie losing her mind? These are just a few of the thoughts that were going through my mind as I read this book. And throughout I had a deep sense of dread that things just are not right in this house, and with these people.
I’m still trying to process my feelings for this book. To say I enjoyed it feels wrong given everything that happened in this book, but I’m glad I was given the chance to read it. If you’re looking for a dark, depressing read about people who are so obsessed with being loved that it overtakes their whole being and drives them to do things that are almost unforgiveable, then pick this one up. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
