Shawl in a Ball – Feather and Fan

Last weekend when I was out shopping, I picked up a ball of Lion Brand’s Shawl in a Ball yarn in the colour Lotus Blossom. I immediately came home and started looking for a pattern make with it. After searching several websites I ended up on the Lion Brand website and I finally decided on the Feather and Fan Shawl which was designed for this particular yarn.

I will warn you now, that purple is my favourite colour, so you will probably see a lot of projects that incorporate it. I do sometimes make a conscious effort to choose other colours, but more often than not I gravitate back to the purples. I especially love the shades of purple in this yarn and how they transition, as well as the pretty sparkle from the metallic thread that winds through it. You can see the sparkle better in this close up of the edge of the shawl.

I’m much more comfortable crocheting than I am knitting, but I taught myself to knit a few years ago because I was tired of being limited by the patterns that were available. At the time it seemed like every time I found a pattern I liked it was a knitting pattern, and I finally decided I was going to learn.

The nice thing about this pattern is that it looks more complicated than it is, so it’s great for someone like me who hasn’t made many knitted projects. The pattern is basically a four row repeat, and only one of those four rows has the lace pattern, so it’s great for a beginner.

As you can see I haven’t gotten very far yet, but already the pattern is starting show itself. I can hardly wait to get it done!

If you knit, what types of projects do you like to make? Are you like me and drawn to a particular colour for your projects?

  1. I’m knitting socks at the moment and I’m loving it! I normally like to crochet and knit in shades of blue and grey but I’ve made more colourful projects recently (bright yellow and hot pinks)
