Review: Fangsters by Jo-Ann Carson

iPad showing cover of Fangsters: A Novel by Jo-Ann Carson

Fangsters is book one in a new series by Jo-Ann Carson, and it’s a fairly good start to the series.

There is a lot going on in this book. Lots of paranormal creatures, lots of characters, lots of hints at past and present relationships between characters, murder, clan wars between different paranormal types, but unfortunately not enough background setup so it felt like a lot was skimmed over. I would have preferred to have had a little more background on some of the characters, and the relationships between paranormal groups so that I could better understand the animosity between some of the characters.

I found there was some awkward phrasing in a couple of places, but only a couple, so it wasn’t something that affected my enjoyment of the book.

There is a fairly large cast of characters, many of whom are related (or related through marriage), and I appreciated that there was a list of characters at the back of the book, because I kept forgetting who was married to whom and had to reference it a few times.

My biggest issue was that the ending seemingly came out of the blue. This book had cozy mystery vibes, except that there was almost no investigation of the mystery, no hints as to who the killer was, and suddenly the culprit was revealed, and the book was done. There wasn’t even a wrap-up to explain the motivation of the killer.

Despite the issues, I did really enjoy the book and I’ll probably check out the next in the series, hoping to get more background and explanations about the characters. I do recommend giving it a try, the characters are fun, and the story is interesting, even if Rebel, the main character, does make some questionable decisions that had me yelling at her in my head. All in all a good start to the series and I hope it just gets better.

Thanks to BookSirens and the author for an advanced copy of this book for review purposes.
