The Ghostwriter by Julie Clark is the story of Olivia, a ghostwriter who takes a job ghostwriting her father’s memoir. She has been estranged from him for years, after growing up dealing with the rumours that he killed his siblings when he was young. Now she is determined to get to the truth.
I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book. I found it to be more of a traditional mystery, with more emphasis on uncovering the past, than on building suspense. In fact I found it a bit slow in the middle, yet it still kept me reading until the early hours of the morning to get to the end of the story.
I enjoyed the flashbacks to the points of view of different characters in the past, interspersed with Olivia’s current day point of view. It really helped to tell the story, and kept me wondering what really happened that fateful night.
If you enjoy a slower mystery, with low stakes suspense, or are a fan of cold case type mysteries, then this book is worth a read.
