I’m beginning to think I’m becoming hard to please, because the premise of Mallory Arnold’s thriller, Cross My Heart, I Hope You Die, sounded good, but unfortunately, like many books I’ve read recently, it fell flat for me.
In Cross My Heart, I Hope You Die, three women,Nora, Ruby, and Cham meet by chance, only to realize all three of them are dating the same man, and he has stolen from all of them. After trying to confront him, they come up with a plan to teach him a lesson, and hopefully recover their losses.
I think there were several things that made this book a less than stellar read for me.
The first was the fact that none of the women clued in that they were being scammed, or if they did have suspicions they brushed them off. Now, I get it, these things happen to people every day, but as a true crime junkie it bugged me that they were all so clueless.
The second problem for me, and it applied to multiple situations throughout the book, was all the coincidences that drove the plot. For instance, how the three women met and found out they were dating the same person felt unbelievable for me, and that’s just one of many examples.
Despite those issues, Cross My Heart, I hope You Die was still an entertaining read and had a satisfying ending for anyone who loves thrillers with slasher movie elements.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Cross My Heart, I Hope You Die will be available on July 14 2026.
