I Am the Monster Under the Bed by Emily Zinnikas is a mix of thriller and light horror, that feels somewhat like the writing of Simone St. James.
Willa returns to her hometown around the 15th anniversary of the deaths of six of her friends, for which some people still blame her. She isn’t there to attend the funeral of a former teacher, one of the only people who ever gave her support as a child, but is soon determined to solve the mystery of who really killed her friends.
This was such a good book. From the beginning the story give creepy vibes, as Willa talks to, and about things that make the adults in her life uncomfortable. It made me sad that rather than listening to her and trying to figure out what was going on, her parents punished her for something she couldn’t help.
Although it was creepy, it wasn’t super gory which I appreciated. I prefer supernatural vibes, and creepiness to real gore in my horror so I was very happy reading this.
I would recommend I Am the Monster Under the Bed to lovers of creepy, haunted house type horror, and fans of Simone St. James, and maybe Darcy Coates.
