A New(ish) Hobby

My watercolour sheep from a YouTube tutorial by Diane Antone.

This is just a short post. I’m on vacation this week, so still not back to my regular review posts. I just wanted to show off how I’m progressing on my newest hobby.

Last fall, I decided that I was finally going to learn to use the watercolour paints that I’ve had on my craft shelves for years (about 15 of them). I bought them way back when I was still married and had wanted, at that time, to use them to make scrapbooking backgrounds and card fronts, but I just could never get the hang of it. Everything I painted looked like a blob, or like a five year old painted it.

Fast forward to last fall, and I was determined to give it another go, and this time around I had hundreds (probably thousands) of YouTube tutorials to help guide me. And to my shock, I was actually able to produce something that didn’t look entirely like a blob!

I’ve been practicing fairly regularly, but I’m still mostly following tutorials, trying to learn new techniques. Since I’m on vacation though, I decided I wanted to spend some of my time trying to do a pet portrait of one of my dogs. I should be spending my time purging things from my apartment but the past month or so has been so stressful, I need the relaxation time more, so I’ll adult again when I’m back to work next week.

Anyway all that to say, I’ve painted these two practice pieces of Jasmine, my chihuahua. The one on the right was my first attempt, and the picture in the middle is my second practice attempt. I’m soon to embark on my third…which will either end up another practice version, or will be the final, depending on the result.

Have you tried any new hobbies lately?

    1. Thank you! You wouldn’t say that if you saw the flowers I was practicing yesterday. 😂😂😂 It’s so funny how you can be successful attempting one technique and fail so dismally at another. But I’ll get there! It’s all about practice!
