The Whitechapel Full Moon Society by Elizabeth DeLozier is a historical mystery set in London during the period when The Jack the Ripper killings were still going on, and they play a significant role in the story.
After her father’s death, Caroline sets out for London to find her brother, Charlie. When she arrives at the boarding house where he was living, she finds that he has disappeared. Having no options, she takes a job as a maid at the boarding house, hoping she can discover his whereabouts while she’s there.
Despite the claim that this book has a supernatural twist, other than vague hints here and there, the supernatural elements are not truly introduced until the final two chapters of the book. I was looking forward to this supernatural aspect of the mystery, but by leaving it until so late in the book it felt almost like an afterthought.
I also found that the story dragged throughout most of the book. As a result I had a hard time staying engaged, and didn’t feel any urge to pick it up after setting it aside.
I would recommend The Whitechapel Full Moon Society if you don’t mind a slower paced mystery, and if you don’t expect the paranormal elements to be a significant part of the story.
